Why is it important to be on the 1st page of Google?

“Just get me on the first page of Google.”

It’s the most common thing I hear from new clients. And they’re not wrong to want it. But in 2026, what the first page of Google actually looks like, and how you get seen on it, has changed significantly.

Here’s what you need to understand.

Why page one still matters

Let’s start with the basics, because they haven’t changed.

The vast majority of people never scroll past the first page of search results. Studies have consistently shown that the first result on Google gets the most clicks by a wide margin, and that traffic drops off sharply from position one to position ten. By page two, you’re largely invisible.

For a local business in Johannesburg, or anywhere else, this is the difference between a phone that rings and one that doesn’t. If someone searches “physiotherapist in Sandton” or “best guesthouse in the Winelands” and you’re not on page one, you’re not in the conversation.

That part hasn’t changed. What has changed is what page one looks like.

Page one in 2026 looks very different

When most people picture a Google results page, they picture ten blue links. That layout has been disappearing for years, and in 2026 it’s barely recognisable.

Here’s what you’re likely to see at the top of a Google results page today:

AI Overviews. Google now generates an AI-written summary at the top of results for a huge range of searches. This pulls from multiple sources and gives users an answer directly on the page, often before they’ve clicked anything. Getting your content cited in an AI Overview is now one of the most valuable forms of visibility on Google.

Local pack. For location-based searches, Google shows a map with three local business listings before the organic results. If you’re a service-based business and you’re not in this pack, you’re losing a significant amount of traffic to competitors who are.

Paid ads. These appear above organic results and are clearly labelled, but they take up prime real estate at the top of the page.

Featured snippets. A single result pulled out and displayed prominently above the rest, often in a box. These go to content that directly and clearly answers the search query.

Organic results. The traditional blue links — still there, still important, but now further down the page than they used to be.

The point is this: page one is more competitive and more complex than it’s ever been. But it’s also more valuable.

What does this mean for your business?

It means that visibility on Google is no longer just about ranking position. It’s about showing up in the right format for the right search.

A few things that matter now:

Your Google Business Profile. For any local or service-based business, this is non-negotiable. An optimised, verified Google Business Profile with strong reviews is your fastest route to visibility in the local pack. I’ve seen businesses with modest websites outperform well-built sites simply because their GBP is in better shape.

Being cited in AI Overviews. This is the new frontier. Google’s AI pulls from sources it considers credible and well-structured. If your website content is clear, authoritative, and answers real questions that your customers are asking, you have a shot at being cited. This is why content quality matters more now than it ever has.

Organic rankings. These still drive significant traffic, especially for commercial searches where someone is ready to buy or book. A strong position 1-3 for the right keyword can still be transformative for any business.

Conclusion

Getting on the first page of Google is still one of the highest-ROI things a small business can invest in. The businesses that show up consistently — in the local pack, in organic results, and increasingly in AI Overviews — are the ones that get the calls, the bookings, and the enquiries.

The difference now is that getting there requires more than just keywords and backlinks. It requires a credible online presence, a well-maintained Google Business Profile, and content that genuinely answers what your customers are searching for.

That’s what modern SEO looks like. And it’s what we help businesses with every day.
